EVPP 619: The Challenge of Biodiversity
Offered: Spring semester, every year
Prerequisites: Graduate standing and 8 hours of ESP coursework or permission of instructor
Credits: 3
Description (from the syllabus): The principle objective is to enrich students' understanding of solving problems in conservation and conservation biology. Such problems require sound science but also include considerations that go beyond science, so in lectures, readings, presentations and papers the class will work with real and sometimes very current problems. This course is intended to give students the necessary background to pursue advanced studies and careers that involve both international and domestic issues in conservation and conservation biology.
This is a discussion-based course interspersed with guest speakers, student-led presentations and written assignments. Topics vary but may include ecosystem services, habitat modification and destruction, overexploitation, invasive species, species management and conservation planning, climate change, and conservation in anthropogenic landscapes.
